Disk Drill is a great, highly useful utility and you can install it and use some of its features for free. If you do ever lose any important files, just buy a license to unlock the additional features in order to recover them. Definitely recommended.

I had two hard drives that were no longer recognizable by any of my Apple computers (or PC’s, for that matter). The volume IDs simply did not appear in Finder. I bought Disk Drill only to recover accidentally deleted files and hoped I never had to use it. As a lark, I plugged in one of my unrecognizable hard drives into my MBP. Again, Finder showed nothing BUT when I started Disk Drill, after a few seconds, the drive’s volume ID appeared within the app! I reopened Finder and amazingly the volume ID was there, too! I was able navigate the directory tree and recover any files I needed. I repeated the above procedure with the second hard drive and lo and behold, I had the same result! The drive ID appeared in the app and in Finder. I was able to see and save any of the files I wanted to to a more stable hard drive!

I have used Disk Drill on all types drives to recover deleted data and it has worked perfectly. The software is simple to use and will attempt to recover deleted files with superficial or in depth methods, all of which I could select. Disk Drill has been the best data recovery software I have used.
I originally bought disk drill to recover media from GoPro SD cards that had been accidentally formatted. It worked amazingly well but it was never a crisis situation until about two years ago when I dropped my main backup disk off my desk, shattering the case on the ground while it was still running, effectively nuking everything I had stored on it, my entire life’s worth of data until that point.
The partition was lost and the disk would no initialize on my mac without manually doing so under utilities. I tried deep file scan and was able to recover some things but not all.
Then, yesterday, after not using disk drill for a long time I took that old broken disk off the shelf and made a sector-by-sector backup to DMG on a new external I just purchased. After it completed, I was able to mount it and THERE WAS ALL MY DATA!!
Years of family photos, countless video projects I have generated, my digital portfolio, tons of media content has been restored.
